The diagnosis of scoliosis will impact 30-40% of the population over a lifetime. These diagnoses may occur in infancy or childhood, adolescence, and even adulthood. And, while the diagnosis at any age may be fear-inducing, there are vast resources to educate and treat patients.

Among the most powerful resources is the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), an international society founded in 1966 which has today become one of the world's premier spine societies. A commitment to research and education in the field of spinal deformities serves as the primary mission of the SRS which includes more than 1,000 of the world's leading spine surgeons, researchers, physician assistants and orthotists.  The vast online resource provides both patients and families with robust opportunities to learn more about their diagnosis, possible treatments, and connections to clinical teams focused on improving the lives of scoliosis patients.

Included as an esteemed member of the SRS is Shay Bess, MD, a spine surgeon at HealthONE’s Denver International Spine Center at Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center.  Dr. Bess specializes in scoliosis, cervical and thoracolumbar spine deformity, and revision spine surgery in pediatric and adult patients.

As a leading researcher of scoliosis in the international community, Dr. Bess has been named Chair on the 57th Annual Meeting of the Scoliosis Research Society to be held September 14-17 in Stockholm, Sweden. The Annual Meeting, which will draw upwards of 1,500 attenders, is open to anyone involved in the treatment of spinal deformities and is aimed toward the improvement of patient care for those with spinal deformities.

Through the collaboration of clinicians and researchers across the world, the SRS’s Annual Meeting will bring the most advanced care to patients around the globe.  No patient or family should feel isolated or without options thanks to clinicians and experts like Dr. Bess.
