At HCA HealthONE Swedish, extraordinary care often shows up in the quiet moments: a calm voice during uncertainty, a reassuring presence during fear and a steady hand when patients need it most.
For one patient, Labor and Delivery nurse Payshence Page was that source of comfort during one of the most important and vulnerable experiences of her life. Payshence was recently nominated for a DAISY Award by Melissa Saavedra, who shared how deeply Payshence impacted her care during labor, delivery and a two-week hospital stay.
From the moment Payshence entered the room, Melissa said she brought calm confidence and genuine kindness. Though Melissa felt overwhelmed and scared, Payshence immediately helped put her at ease.
“There are many parts of my labor that I don’t fully remember,” Melissa wrote in her nomination, “but what I do remember clearly is Payshence’s voice encouraging me through every contraction and every difficult moment.”
Melissa shared that Payshence never made her feel like just another patient or that her delivery was just another shift. Instead, Payshence helped guide her through one of the hardest and most beautiful experiences of her life: welcoming her baby boy, Santiago, safely into the world.
Her reassurance, gentle words and steady presence left a lasting impression.
Following pregnancy complications, Melissa remained in the hospital for two weeks. During that time, she said Payshence continued to make a difference each time she walked into the room. With a warm smile, positive attitude and comforting presence, Payshence helped make the hospital feel less like a hospital and more like a safe space.
“She made the environment feel lighter and helped me feel more like myself, even on the hardest days,” Melissa wrote.
Payshence’s nomination reflects the heart of the DAISY Award, which recognizes nurses who provide exceptional, compassionate care to patients and families. Her ability to combine clinical skill with kindness, reassurance and human connection exemplifies the commitment our nurses bring to every patient, every day.
Congratulations, Payshence, and thank you for the meaningful difference you make for patients and families at HCA HealthONE Swedish.
