When Matt Turrie stepped into his role as Nurse Manager for the Oncology unit at HCA HealthONE Swedish, he faced the challenge of leading a team through transition while building trust with colleagues who were still getting to know him.
In less than a year, Matt has done more than manage operations. He has helped transform the culture of the unit.
Matt was nominated for the DAISY Transformational Leadership Award by colleagues who described him as a leader who is present, humble and willing to step in wherever he is needed. One nomination shared that Matt has “changed the dynamic” of the floor, noting that he supports his team during difficult shifts, helps with hands-on work and takes time to connect with employees equally.
His leadership is grounded in both clinical expertise and genuine care for his team. Before becoming Nurse Manager, Matt brought extensive oncology experience from his work as a charge nurse at the infusion center. That expertise has become an important resource for the Oncology team, whether he is helping troubleshoot a complex clinical issue or providing support during a demanding shift.
Colleagues say Matt has been intentional about getting to know each member of his staff and creating an environment built on mutual respect. He regularly shares patient compliments and peer recognition, helping ensure team members feel seen, valued and encouraged.
Matt has also strengthened shared governance on the unit by revitalizing the Unit-Based Council. By helping restart this structure, he has empowered staff to take ownership of their practice and contribute their voices to decisions that affect their work and patient care.
During a time of staffing challenges, Matt also took a long-term approach by hiring and mentoring a significant group of new graduate nurses. His nominators described this not simply as a staffing solution, but as an investment in the future of the unit.
Through his work ethic, advocacy and commitment to his team, Matt has earned the trust of those around him. His colleagues describe him as a leader who supports his staff, advocates for patients and inspires the team to reach for a higher standard of oncology care.
