Paul has been an active member of the SRMC Clinical Ethics Committee for over five years, and was a long-standing member of the Clinical Ethics Committee at The Medical Center of Aurora for 15 years. As a committee member, he is able to help with policy questions, educate the committee on advance directives principles and clarify ethical principles and tensions in family dynamics. Paul is most always called to assist when there is need for an ethics consult, taking time from his job to assist in the consult process as a volunteer. In consults, he is not afraid to be direct in the questions he asks, but he is also considerate of the pain that a family may be feeling as they struggle with difficult decisions. He also teaches workshops to community members in the areas of end of life care, ethics, Medicare and Medicaid issues and other patient care concerns. Maureen Tarrant, CEO of Sky Ridge Medical Center, heartily endorsed Paul’s nomination for the award. She noted his devotion to ethics, his leadership and compassion for others and his commitment to the rights and values of people.
