Diagnosing and Treating Sleep Disorders

Diagnosing Sleep Disorders

Today's lifestyle is so busy that people often don't have the time to recognize the symptoms of fatigue.  Most of us need eight hours of sound sleep to function at our best, and good health demands good sleep; however, the majority of Americans are getting far less sleep than they need to feel their best.

HealthONE doctors specialize in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders.  To diagnose sleep conditions, your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and medical history, and perform a physical exam. Sometimes your doctor may ask you to participate in a sleep study or fill out a sleep diary to track your sleep patterns.  In addition, you may be asked questions about your:

  • Mood
  • Physical or mental symptoms or problems
  • Daily activities
  • Work pattern or history
  • Sleep patterns
  • Snoring
  • Prescription and non-prescription medicines and supplements
  • Travel patterns
  • Eating habits
  • Recreational substance use (eg, alcohol, tobacco, other drugs)

Treating Sleep Disorders

The treatment and management of insomnia and sleep disorders depends on its underlying cause. Transient or intermittent sleeping problems may not need treatment if it lasts only a few days. When treatment is needed, as in chronic insomnia or sleep apnea, it may involve lifestyle changes, medications, and other treatments.

The first step in treating insomnia is to identify and treat any underlying medical or psychological problems. The ultimate goal is to achieve a normal and restorative pattern of sleep.

Treatment involves the following:

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Medications
  • Surgery
  • Other treatments/altnerative treatments
