Any time a patient has surgery there are inherent risks. However, research shows that the following treatment guidelines help minimize complications associated with surgery.

National Guidelines for Reducing Surgical Infections

• Giving patients an antibiotic within 1 hour of surgery
• Giving patients the most appropriate preventative antibiotic(s) for the type of surgery performed
• Stopping the antibiotic within 24 hours after surgery
• Ordering the recommended treatment to prevent blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
• Making sure patients receive the recommended treatment to prevent blood clots (venous thromboembolism)
• Following the appropriate hair removal protocol
• Controlling the postoperative blood glucose of cardiac surgery patients
