Briefing
Based on World Health Organization guidelines and checklist, our surgical team holds a briefing, timeout and debriefing before every procedure conducted in the OR.
Timeout
Before an incision is made the team takes a timeout to:
- Have all team members have introduced themselves by name and role
- Reconfirm that they are operating on the right person with the correct surgery on the correct side of the body
- Discuss patient safety concerns
Debriefing
Before the surgeon and patient leave the room, the team confirms:
- All instruments sponges and needles are accounted for
- All specimens are accurately labeled
- All medications are secured
They also document any delays in the case and discuss any permanent changes to the equipment/instruments used in this type of case.
