Briefing

Based on World Health Organization guidelines and checklist, our surgical team holds a briefing, timeout and debriefing before every procedure conducted in the OR.

Timeout

Before an incision is made the team takes a timeout to:

  • Have all team members have introduced themselves by name and role
  • Reconfirm that they are operating on the right person with the correct surgery on the correct side of the body
  • Discuss patient safety concerns

Debriefing

Before the surgeon and patient leave the room, the team confirms:

  • All instruments sponges and needles are accounted for
  • All specimens are accurately labeled
  • All medications are secured

They also document any delays in the case and discuss any permanent changes to the equipment/instruments used in this type of case.
