Perinatal Safety: Healthy Moms & Babies

Bilirubin Screening for Jaundice

On Feb. 1, 2005, HealthONE and HCA became the first healthcare system in the nation to voluntarily require all of its hospitals with birthing units to use a simple blood test to screen newborns for elevated levels of bilirubin.

Medication Safety for Pregnant Women

Drawing from the success of safety protocols used by the aviation industry, a team of clinicians created pre- and in-use checklists for safe use of three high-risk medications commonly used in labor and delivery. By the end of 2005, all HCA hospitals that deliver babies had the safety checks in place for these medications.

Fetal Heart Monitoring

Fetal monitoring is a method of reducing negative outcomes for babies and mothers during delivery. A monitoring device is applied when the mother is admitted. The device allows clinicians to assess the baby’s heart rate and watch for distress in the birthing process.

A strong, regular heartbeat is a sign that a baby is doing well during labor. A significant, prolonged drop in rate or intensity of the heartbeat is a sign of distress of a fetus that may, on occasion, necessitate a cesarean delivery in order to prevent injury to the baby. We require all nurses and credentialed physicians and midwives to complete a fetal monitoring course.

Keeping Your Newborn Safe

All of the Labor & Delivery units at HealthONE Hospitals have sophisticated security systems. Your baby wears a special bracelet and an alarm sounds if your child is taken from the designated area. If this alarm sounds, the hospital is locked down until your baby is found. While it's unlikely that this will happen, it's good to know that the security system is there just in case.
