In certain cases, surgery or a heart procedure that is performed in a cardiac catheterization lab may be needed to correct or improve the underlying causes of heart disease.
The coronary arteries carry blood containing this oxygen and nutrients to the heart. If these arteries become blocked, an artery or vein from another part of the body can be used to build a detour for blood flow. This is most commonly done through open-chest surgery, but a minimally invasive technique, which involves smaller incisions, may also be used. In some cases, usually in open heart surgery, a heart-lung machine is used to bypass the heart. The procedure is often referred to as a CABG, for Coronary Artery Bypass Graft.
