Community

HealthONE hospitals and outpatient centers have always been committed to serving our patients and communities – and that will never change. We will continue Memorial’s historic charity care policies at a level at least the same or better than currently exists.

As background, in 2010 HealthONE provided nearly $98 million in unpaid medical costs (not charges) to treat the indigent, uninsured and under-insured. This includes free or charity care to our poorest patients (200% of federal poverty level); uninsured discounts to patients whose incomes are too high to qualify for Medicaid but also cannot afford insurance; and bad debt by those who do not pay. Additionally, we provided $43 Million in uncompensated care to Medicaid patients (the difference between what Medicaid pays and the actual costs to treat).

We will continue to be a resource and leader in public health improvement initiatives and, with Memorial, think we can make great strides toward reducing incidence of disease and illness.  Along those lines, HealthONE thinks it is imperative for our hospitals to support and participate in state and regional disaster preparedness planning and would ensure Memorial maintains a key role for Southern Colorado.

Community health improvement is always a priority at HealthONE, which is why we are an active participant with statewide obesity prevention programs (LiveWell Colorado and Fit 4 Colorado), Concussion Management education for young athletes, MRSA and other infection control programs and many others.  We also support more than 150 community organizations – through donations, fund-raising with them and in-kind services – to better enable them to meet their missions to improve the health and quality of life for all of us.  We anticipate in partnership with Memorial, the scope and effectiveness of community organizations will improve significantly.

Another key to improving the health and vitality of our communities is to ensure we have well-trained, skilled healthcare providers for our future.  Both HCA and HealthONE have vast experience in supporting Graduate Medical Education & other Physician Training Programs. For example, in the past 15 years, HealthONE has invested more than $50 million (unreimbursed) in Graduate Medical Education, physician residencies and internships, and Medical School programs at Swedish, Presbyterian/St. Luke’s, Rose, The Medical Center of Aurora and Sky Ridge.  From 1996 through 2010, these programs have supported training of more than 1,300 physicians or about 90 per year.
