HealthONE: A Proud Colorado Company
Is HealthONE a Colorado company or from out-of-state?
HealthONE is a Colorado company. We formed in 1995 as a partnership between an international healthcare management company, and a locally based 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to improve the health and healthcare of Coloradoans. HealthONE has a local governing board with equal representation from each partner.
- Success of HealthONE hospitals has helped The Colorado Health Foundation expand to one of the state’s largest charitable foundations able to support programs across Colorado, not just Denver. For instance, since 2007, The Colorado Health Foundation has made 19 grants for $6.3 Million to non-profit organizations in Colorado Springs; $9.1 Million for all of El Paso county.
- HCA offers HealthONE the advantages of a large hospital network, to share best practices, insights to new technologies and programs, and economies in purchasing supplies and administrative operations.
What is the difference in quality care provided to patients in for-profit hospitals vs. non-profit hospitals?
Citizens should evaluate Patient Care and Quality Outcomes for themselves. Broad statements about non-profits vs. for-profits are not accurate. All of our nurses, staff and physicians focus tirelessly to provide the best care for every patient and to always improve patient safety.
- For example, HealthONE has better outcomes than Colorado Springs’ Memorial Health System on Heart Attacks, Heart Failure, Pneumonia, and Surgical Infection Prevention
- Fortunately, there are public sources available to evaluate the facts, such as www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov
What are the advantages of being part of a large system?
Large healthcare systems, including nonprofit organizations, have greater access to best demonstrated clinical practices to deliver high quality outcomes. HealthONE gathers these from colleagues nationwide and has been first in the state to implement many new patient safety practices. Size also allows greater economies of scale to reduce costs of supplies, contracts and administrative expenses. These efficiencies help fund our re-investments in our facilities, technologies and communities.
How does HealthONE benefit our community?
Community benefit is very important to our organization. You can measure it many ways. First, in the numbers of patients we serve — more than 800,000 a year in our hospitals and outpatient centers. Some other ways to measure:
- Look at dollars invested in uncompensated (unpaid) medical care we provided to patients. In 2009, HealthONE contributed more than $416 Million in uncompensated care — uninsured, under-insured, and charity care.
- HealthONE serves all patients. HealthONE self pay/uninsured = 4.6% (with NSMC at 10.0%); Medicare = 40% (with TMCA at 47%); Medicaid = 10% (with P/SLMC at 22%). We also serve military patients across our system.
- HealthONE hospitals and facilities paid more than $95 Million in state and federal taxes in 2009.
- We donated more than $4 Million to nonprofit organizations in our communities. We also provided nearly $20 million in professional education, community health education, and support of other economic development in our communities.
- Many of our 8,700 employees and 3,000 affiliated physicians are actively involved in community groups and serve on boards of local, regional and state organizations.
What do you do to support an improved healthcare system for the future?
One of our greatest urgencies is to ensure there are enough healthcare professionals to treat a growing population. HealthONE supports and provides Graduate Medical Education, and Nursing and Allied Health Professional Education programs.
- For example, HealthONE has many GME and Medical School programs to enhance our community physician services: Family Medicine, Psychology, Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Critical Care, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Physiatry, Podiatry, Radiology, Anesthesia, Osteopathic Medicine, and Occupational & Environmental Medicine.
- HealthONE also has heavily invested in our community Nursing and Allied Health services: over 25 academic affiliations, faculty appointments, scholarships to BSN and MSN, continuing education, and tuition reimbursement
